Who is your school for?Our online school is designed for self-driven students ages 11-18 who thrive with flexibility and independence in their educational journey. We're an ideal fit for: Independent learners who take ownership of their education and manage their time effectively Curious and resourceful students who enjoy diving deep into subjects and solving complex problems Project-oriented thinkers who learn best by creating, building, and applying knowledge to real-world challenges Flexible schedulers who benefit from our fully asynchronous format, whether due to extracurricular pursuits, travel, health considerations, or personal learning preferences Traditional school students seeking supplementary, highly engaging, and relevant coursework to complement their existing education or explore subjects not available at their current school
-
Who teaches and supports my child? While courses are primarily self-paced and asynchronous, each course is led by a Course Guide—a subject-matter expert who gives weekly feedback on assignments and hosts flexible live sessions for groups or individuals. Each full-time and part-time student is also paired with a Success Coach, their first point of contact for any questions or concerns. When extra help is needed, students can book live sessions with our tutors across a range of subjects.
-
Can children younger than 11 apply? While our core program is designed for students ages 11-18, we evaluate applications from younger students on a case-by-case basis. For children under 11, we consider: The student's demonstrated self-direction and independence Their ability to manage the rigorous, project-based curriculum Previous academic performance and learning experiences Readiness for our asynchronous online learning environment If you have a younger child who shows exceptional maturity, strong self-management skills, and thrives with challenging academic work, we encourage you to contact our admissions team for an initial consultation. We can discuss your child's specific needs and determine if our program would be a suitable fit at this stage of their educational journey.
-
Are there opportunities for learners to socialize?Absolutely! While our program is fully online and asynchronous, we recognize the vital importance of social connection and community in education. We've designed several ways for our students to interact, collaborate, and build meaningful relationships: Virtual Community Spaces: Students can connect in our moderated online forums and chat platforms to discuss interests, share projects, and support each other's learning journeys. Virtual Clubs: Students can join or create interest-based virtual clubs that meet regularly to explore shared passions—from coding and debate to book discussions, environmental activism, creative writing, gaming, and more. These student-led groups foster deep connections around common interests. Collaborative Projects: Many of our assignments offer opportunities for optional teamwork, allowing students to collaborate with peers who share similar interests or complementary skills. Live Optional Events: We host optional live sessions including student showcases, discussion groups, and special-interest activities that bring students together in real-time. Regional and International Meetups: We offer various opportunities for face-to-face connection, including regional meetups organized with parent involvement, local field trips to museums, science exhibits, cultural sites, and more. We also organize global learning expeditions where our families can travel together to explore curriculum themes in real-world contexts. These optional experiences allow online relationships to deepen through shared adventures and discoveries. Peer Feedback Sessions: Students develop communication skills and build connections by providing structured feedback on each other's projects.

Is my child guaranteed admission into Ark Institute?Admission to Ark Institute is selective and based on several factors, including available space for each trimester and a student’s academic readiness. Our courses are designed to be challenging, and conceptually advanced, requiring students to be at or above grade level in reading and math to fully engage with the material. Since Ark Institute’s curriculum emphasizes deep thinking, problem-solving, and independent learning, we are not currently equipped to provide remedial instruction for students who are significantly below grade level. We encourage families to review the "Requirements" page for more details on eligibility and the application process. If you have specific questions about your child’s readiness for Ark Institute, feel free to contact our admissions team for guidance.
-
What will my child's weekly schedule look like?Because Ark Institute is fully asynchronous, families have the flexibility to structure their child’s learning schedule in a way that best suits their needs. Parents and students can plan coursework on a weekly basis, allowing for a personalized approach to time management. Generally speaking, it is good practice for students to submit all weekly work, especially larger projects, by Friday midnight to account for timely feedback. Full-time Student Schedule: For core interdisciplinary coursework, students can expect to spend anywhere from 2-3.5 hours per week per course depending on course level as well as student ability, efficiency, and personal learning goals. Taking 5 courses per trimester, this comes up to roughly 15 hours per week. In addition to core course work, students should take into account their trimester book report, weekly math assignments, and if they chose, a Yearly Compass Project. All together, these together add an additional 3.5-4.5 hours per week. Taking all of the above into consideration, a full-time student should plan for anywhere between 18-23 hours per week on course work and related activities. Families are encouraged to establish a routine that promotes consistency, engagement, and balance.

What curriculum do you use? We've developed our own curriculum: The Ark Institute Framework. Our model modernizes education for the AI age through five interconnected pillars: 1. Technological Literacy: We introduce robotics, computational thinking, coding, and AI concepts at a younger age in order to establish familiarity and insight with technology's inextricable presence in our lives. And while not everyone needs to be a software engineer or roboticist, everyone will become an AI user and work alongside intelligent systems. By mastering the craft of collaborating with technology rather than just consuming it, learners gain the new baseline skill set that tomorrow’s workplaces will expect, much as basic computer skills once were. 2. Developing Human-Essential Skills: Our approach transcends traditional memorization and routine tasks—areas where AI increasingly excels—to focus on the uniquely human qualities that drive innovation and meaningful connection. We prioritize developing creativity, critical thinking, problem formulation and solving, social and emotional intelligence, communication and presentation, teamwork, self-directed learning, purpose and self-reflection, and adaptability. 3. Comprehensive Interdisciplinary Coursework: We structure our coursework around five all-encompassing subject areas that transcend traditional academic boundaries, enabling students to develop versatile perspectives and integrative thinking skills. These are: Environmental Stewardship & Sustainable Resource Management Social Sciences, Ethics & Community Building Health, Medicine & Well-being Science, Technology & Innovation Arts, Culture & Creative Expression 4. Continuous Curriculum Updates: Our curriculum is flexible and responsive to the continuous shifts in industry and society as a whole. By maintaining industry-education awareness, we modify and update our coursework as frequently as needed, ensuring that learning is as relevant as possible for our students. 5. Lifelong Learning Mindset: We understand that in today's world, the most valuable skill isn't what you know, but how you learn. By mastering the art of self-directed learning, leveraging technology, and solving real-world challenges, our students don't just prepare for future education—they develop the habits, curiosity, and resourcefulness that turn every experience into an opportunity for growth.
-
How do you measure progress if you don’t use traditional tests? We track mastery against clear rubrics for each Human-Essential Competency. Parents see narrative feedback, project artifacts in a digital portfolio, and color-coded dashboards that update in real time.
-
Is the work rigorous enough?Rigor here means deep understanding and real-world application. Students must meet high-level criteria on extensive projects (requiring at least 8+ hours of work) before it will be considered as evidence toward meeting competencies.
-
Won’t kids lose motivation without grades?Research demonstrates that intrinsic motivation flourishes when learners have clear goals, meaningful choices, and timely feedback. Our project-based approach connects directly to students' interests, making their progress feel personally significant rather than driven by external rewards. We recognize that students accustomed to traditional grade-focused environments may need time to adjust to our learning model. We're committed to providing comprehensive support throughout this transition to ensure every learner can thrive. However, we also understand that our approach may not align with every student's learning style or current needs, and we're transparent about helping families determine if Ark Institute is the right fit.
-
How do you keep students accountable?Clear weekly milestones, mentor check-ins, and public exhibitions of work create real accountability. Parents can also see log-ins, submissions, and feedback timestamps in the portal any time.
-
What type of transcripts do you students earn?Students graduate with mastery transcripts. Mastery transcripts are widely accepted by universities, including some of the most selective institutions in the world. You can learn more here.
-
Without grades or a GPA, will colleges take my child seriously?Absolutely. Colleges already read competency-based transcripts from schools like ours. Our profile explains exactly how to interpret each demonstrated skill, and selective universities have accepted students from similar models for years.
-
Do we have to live in the United States to attend Ark Institute? As a fully online private school, Ark Institute is open to students worldwide, providing a flexible, asynchronous learning experience that can be accessed from anywhere with an internet connection. Our interdisciplinary courses are designed to be globally relevant, incorporating essential skills and hands-on projects that transcend geographic boundaries. Students also have opportunities to connect with peers internationally, participate in global challenges, and engage in cross-cultural learning experiences.
